Behind the Cover — The Visual World of Unchosen

I get asked about the Unchosen cover almost as often as I get asked about Jadira herself, so let's talk about what's actually on it and why.

The crown, and the thread that runs through it

The crown isn't decoration. It's the visual spine of the whole series — every cover from Unchosen through Unwritten carries it, and every cover carries a red thread woven through it that changes a little each time. On this one, the thread is thin, barely holding. That's not an accident. It's Jadira at the start: not crowned, not claimed, just a girl the Dragon Court never managed to fully erase, with one thin line connecting her to everything she's about to become. Watch that thread across the series — it thickens as she does.

Why gold, black, and blood

The palette is deliberate: midnight black, dragon gold, and a crimson that's closer to old blood than anything bright. Black is the court. The discipline, the quiet erasure, the years she spent surviving by disappearing. Gold is her, specifically the gold in her eyes that gave away what she was long before she understood it herself. Crimson is the cost. Every color on that cover is doing narrative work, not just looking good next to each other.

No dragon on the cover, and that's on purpose

If you were expecting a dragon draped across the cover, you won't find one, and that's intentional. The dragon in this series was never a separate creature to reveal. It's integrated into who Jadira is, not a costume change. Putting one on the cover would've turned an internal truth into a plot twist reveal, and that's not what this book is doing. The cover stays with her face, her eyes, the crown she hasn't earned yet.

Working with Carin at GetCovers

This design came out of a real back-and-forth with Carin at GetCovers. Getting the crown weight right, getting the thread thin enough to look fragile without disappearing, getting gold that reads as eyes and not just decoration. Small changes, a lot of them, until it looked like the book instead of just a cover for it.

What's next

Unclaimed's cover keeps the same bones, same crown, same bloodline of color,but that thread doesn't stay thin forever. I'll let you see for yourselves when it's ready.
